What Will Your Days Add Up To?

When I was a kid I loved physics.

In junior high school I was reading books on quantum physics.

They were the kind that had all the math taken out.

When I got to college I naturally studied physics.

The math was clearly the toughest part.

It's one thing to think about concepts in the abstract.

But in order to do experiments and take measurements, you need a lot of math.

(Even Einstein had to find a math friend to help him with general relativity.)

Every class was more or less the same.

Before I learned the math, it was intimidating and frustrating.

After learning the math, it was easy and familiar.

This is pretty much the standard operating procedure for us humans.

Before we learn something, it's frustrating and intimidating.

But if you go through it slow enough, and have enough persistence, it will become easy and familiar.

Of course, patience and persistence are pretty rare these days.

Most people, if they don't get something right away, they give up.

Being constantly surrounded by social media, clickbait TV news, and all the others competing for our attention, it's easy to fall into that mindset.

If it isn't easy, or doesn't make perfect sense RIGHT NOW, then it's not worth our goldfish attention span.

Of course, if you want to get stuff beyond what most normal people get, you've got to do things that the average person doesn't do.

That, however, doesn't mean you need to do big and magnificent things.

All it really means is shifting your attention slightly.

If you spend a few minutes a day BUILDING something (a skill, a birdhouse, anything), in a while you'll HAVE something.

What you build is up to you.

But if you waste all of your precious time and attention on things that don't give you anything after you're finished with them, you're having fun, but that's about it.

To be sure, you NEED to enjoy yourself.

Nobody wants to work in a coal mind 24/7.

But if you give yourself a little bit of time to learn something each day, something that is ADDITIVE, you'll be slowly creating something.

And that something could be a skill that few people have.

And if you have something few people have, you'll get something few people get.

This is the true secret of building a fortune.

It happens very, very slowly.

And is the sum total of not only the things you DO on a daily basis, but the things you STOP doing.
