  5. https://loopvids.s3.amazonaws.com/Aug10APost.mp4 Most, if not all, of self-help products are consumed "as if" they are entertainment. This is why self help CAN be like an addiction. But other self help is the opposite. The phrase, "self help" is very, very vague. From a purely objective standpoint, it means any thing you do, on your own, to "help" or "improve" yourself. Exercise clearly belongs in this category. If you join the military, or are on a sports team, somebody ELSE will want you to do exercises. Because they benefit from your healthier and more physically fit body. But when you decide to do exercises on your own, for your own reasons, that is the perfect definition of "self help." Similarly, when you learn something complicated, that takes a lot of time. Playing a musical instrument, learning a complex software. This takes time, and effort, and you can measure your progress. Just like with exercise. In exercise, musical training and software teaching, the idea of a "fake guru" or even a "guru" doesn't make sense. There are instructors. If you wanted to get better at ANYTHING, it takes practice. Maybe ten percent study, and the rest practice. Even if you were learning something extremely complicated like Photoshop, you might watch a ten minute video on how to do one thing. But most of your time would be trying all the different ways to do that one thing. Other categories of "self help" are not like this. These are the ones that are consumed like fiction. Which categories are these in? Generally, the "guru" or "false guru" categories are anything requires you talk to or interact with others. Making more money, or improving your relationships. But there are two critical aspects within the "false guru" realm. A very strange combination of laziness and fear. When you decide to get a six pack, the laziness is there, but the fear is not. Nobody gets sweaty palms and heart palpitations as they approach the gym door. But when it comes to improving ourselves through some kind of social skills, this is TERRIFYING. So terrifying that our cognitive dissonance doesn't even allow our brains to think in terms of practice. Instead, we think in terms of magic. Get that one "secret" idea into your head, and sidestep all the necessary work. This is when self help is consumed like fiction. You read a fictional story and go along for the ride. You get to imagine killing bad guys and saving good guys. But you know it's fiction. When you're done, it's back to real life. But with self help, it's not like that. We read self help books, and the hero is our future selves. While we are consuming them, they feel really good. But the thing they are missing is nothing will change without continuous and persistent SKILL BUILDING. However, if any skill building involves fear, we don't do them. So, the trick is to build skills that DON'T require we ever leave our comfort zone. This will make ALL skills easier to master. Especially social skills. 6. https://loopvids.s3.amazonaws.com/July18Post.mp4 Most strategies aren't really strategies. They are explanations of desired outcomes. The reasons for this can be pretty complex. And you can go way down the rabbit hole trying to figure out why. For example, whenever politicians try and make promises in order to get elected they always do what marketing experts recommend. They "sell the sizzle." They say things like, "bring back jobs." Or "jump start the economy." Or "increase the social safety net." These are all very vague. Which means they mean different things to different people. And, nobody ever asks how, specifically, they are going to do those things. They just sound good. They make us feel good when we hear them. They validate us. They are very carefully crafted marketing messages. Not plans with any details. If you're a politician, this is a good strategy. Usually not for us dumb voters, but it's a useful technique if you ever want to get elected. But for the rest of us peasants, we need actual strategies. Imagine if you were on a high school basketball team. And it was the final game of the season. A win would send you to the playoffs, and you'd be heroes of the school. In this situation, you would expect some very specific, step by step instructions from your coach. Imagine if he said: "Ok, what I want you to do, is get out there, and score more points than the other team, OK?" Gee, thanks, coach. This is the extent of most self help advice. They are structured very much like political slogans. They describe an outcome in very vague, but very pleasing "truisms." Consider the very common "pick up" technique. Of "demonstrating value." Now, before we look that complicated sounding word, what do you think when you see somebody you'd like to talk to? Somebody attractive, who you'd like to think YOU were attractive. Like most normal people, you think things like: "I wish she liked me." "How can I get her to like me?" Or other similar sentences. Now compare that common advice of "demonstrating value." How, specifically, is that phrase DIFFERENT from the more simple, "get them to like you?" You walk up and try a bunch of different stuff to "get them to like you." But that term, "demonstrate value" describes the EXACT SAME process. It's an OUTCOME, not a strategy. It's not any more helpful than the goofy coach's advice to score more points than the other team. Now, there ARE plenty of techniques to demonstrate value. Wear nice clothes. Get a six pack. Have some clever stories in your brain. These all have one thing in common. You show up, present yourself or demonstrate your skills. They're supposed to stand there, and VALUE YOU because of how you look, or your performance. Lucky for us, there IS a much, much easier way. That doesn't require any goofy value demonstrating techniques. Instead, it involves finding the value in them. Something VERY FEW people take the time to do. Which will not only make you stand out, but stand out by HOW you made them feel fantastic. Learn How: https://mindpersuasion.com/conversation-hero/
  7. https://loopvids.s3.amazonaws.com/Oct24Post.mp4 One of the things that pops up if you study or teach language is the difference between recognition and production. Recognition is easy. You can hear somebody else speak, and know what they mean. But it would be much harder for somebody to spontaneously speak those same words. Going from thoughts to words is much more difficult than hearing words and then turning them into thoughts. But this happens far beyond language. We hear a word, and we know what it means. When we are talking about tangible nouns, like dogs or cheeseburgers or cement trucks, it's pretty simple. You hear the word, "dog" and you think of a dog. But this also works with intangible nouns and metaphors. This is when we can run into problems. The self help area is FILLED with these metaphors and intangible nouns. We hear them, and we KNOW kind of what they mean. But only in a "When I see it I'll know it" kind of way. Not in a "how can I create it" kind of way. This is one reason why the self-help industry is a BILLION dollar industry. Just like the weight loss industry is a BILLION dollar industry. If it were EASY to lose weight, people would do it. They wouldn't keep buying weight loss product after weight loss product. Both the weight loss industry and the self help industry have a few things in common. One is they are filled with rational SOUNDING advice. What's missing is how SPECIFICALLY are you supposed to APPLY that advice. Eating fewer calories than you burn everyday is NOT complicated. Doing that consistently IS. Plenty of advice in self help is like this. We hear the advice a ton of times. We even say it ourselves tons of times. But it's only in a recognition sort of way. Not in a production sort of way. We can see it, we can sort of imagine it, we can say it. But it's very, very hard to do it. One of the most common ideas that falls under this category is one of FRAME. With a strong enough frame, you can sell anything to anybody. With a strong enough frame, you can seduce anybody. With a strong enough frame, you can get anybody to do anything. What's missing is how, EXACTLY do you CREATE this mysterious thing called, "frame"? Turns out there is a step by step method to do just that. Start on the inside. And then express it on the outside. Step by step. Learn How: https://www.udemy.com/course/vebal-assassin/
  8. https://loopvids.s3.amazonaws.com/Aug27Post.mp4 In banking, they have something called "duration mismatch." When people make deposits, they can take them out at any time. These are called "demand deposits." But when banks lend out money, then lend the money for longer, fixed periods. Which means that on one side, they have, say $1,000,000 in deposits. These are deposits that could, theoretically, be withdrawn at any time. But that same money is lent out, but in fixed terms. Car loans, house loans, etc. These are for much longer periods. Theoretically, if EVERYBODY came to take out their money at once, their would be a big problem. According to the rules, the depositors could take out their money at any time. But the people who borrowed that same money have 5-30 years to pay it back. The duration of the depositors is day to day. The duration of the borrowers is long term. Hence the term, "duration mismatch." Humans have a lot of problems that are based on an idea of "mismatch." For example, if you were to practice an instrument, you would know, without even needing to think, that it would take a while. On the other hand the self-help industry is FILLED with ideas of "instant" this and "instant" that. But consider that EVERTYHING is best seen as a skill. And all skills take time. And most skills have ZERO upper limit. Meaning the more you practice, the better you get. People are drawn to "one weird trick" ideas in things like health, social skills, and money. One because we all WANT those things. We all WANT improvements in those areas. And we want them sooner, rather than later. But more importantly, the idea of the PROCESS of going where we are NOW to where we WANT to be is assumed to be PAINFUL. Getting into better shape is painful. Practicing social skills is painful. Practicing money skills is painful. But that's only because the alternative to the "one weird trick" idea, (which we all kind of know is a con anyway) is the "suck it up and do it" idea. Like ripping off a band aid. Or setting a compound fracture. But this is an unhelpful way of looking at things. A much more resourceful way is to think in terms of SLOW growth. Very, very slow. So slow it seems normal. So slow it's VERY easy. So slow it's NOT painful. And since these are skills with NO upper limit, even if you go REALLY slow, you'll still make daily progress. For the rest of your life. Get Started: http://mindpersuasion.com/social-anxiety-killer/
  9. Once in high school, as a joke, I put a Big Mac in the tool box that was in my truck. My friend dared me to leave it there. After about a month, it started to smell. The mold had grown into the shape of the box it was in. Eventually I had to throw it out and it took me a while to get the stink out of my tool box. You're supposed to clean out your fridge once in a while. For the same reason. Stuff gets hidden in the back. It gets moldy, but so long as it's sealed up inside of a Tupperware container, you won't smell it. There's a movie with Tom Cruise where he's having his eyeballs replaced on the black market. They have ID scanner type things in everybody's eyeballs, and his character has to sneak in under the radar so he can save the day. So he wakes up after having black market eyeball surgery, and stumbles around for something to eat. And he grabs an old moldy carton of milk and drinks it. Of course, nowadays McDonalds puts all kinds of sketchy chemicals into their food. You could buy a sack of McDonalds and hide it in your bomb shelter and it would probably still be edible (no mold) in a couple decades. The idea of old and moldy food is gross, but it's helpful. We all have tons of ideas in our heads. But unless we get them OUT of our heads and figure out a way to LOOK at them, they'll end up getting stale and moldy inside our brains. Most people think the same thoughts every day. They say the same things to the same people. They consume the same information. And then they wonder why NOTHING ever happens to them. The answer lies in the grammar of the above sentence. Man of us seem to think that OUR job is to do and think the same things over and over, and wait for SOMETHING to happen TO US. As if we are somehow going to receive a FREE PRESENT from the "wish fairy." Unless we DO something, we won't GET something. If we DO the same thing every day, we'll GET the same thing every day. It's seems logical that if we want to GET something different, we have to DO something different. And before actions comes thoughts. If we want to do different things, (so we can get different things) we need to THINK different thoughts. One way to make this very easy is to let those thoughts OUT of your brain. Take a few minutes every day to write down your creative thoughts. Things you might do. Call it your, "What If..." journal. It could be the seed of your greatness.
