Unless you are a freak or have spent some time learning some memory techniques, you forget somebody's name a few seconds after you hear it. Even in school, when we are told exactly what to remember, we study all night, and get a B. If you are a prosecuting attorney, and all you have is eyewitness testimony, you won't even bother. Study after study has shown how faulty our memories are. Even super goofy studies where they have two guys carrying a big painting down the street show half of us aren't even paying attention. The two guys with the painting purposely block somebody, the person waits, one of the guys goes behind the painting, and a COMPLETELY different person comes back out. Only about HALF of the people notice this. This is kind of funny, but it also presents a problem. Because whenever we go into a NEW situation, our brains MUST figure out how to feel about it. So it quickly checks all the similar experiences in our past. If we've done that thing a bunch of times successfully, we'll get a strong positive response. But if we haven't, we'll get anxiety as a response. This is why we feel confident doing EASY things. We define those as easy since we've done them a bunch of times. Our mind-body system notices we're going into a situation where we've had TONS of success before, and sends back a, "sure, no problem," response. The problems come when we WANT to feel confident doing things we AREN'T confident doing. Killing it in job interviews. Making a ton of money in sales. Talking to attractive people. The most common way to develop confidence in these areas is to simply muscle your way through. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Build in tons of positive experiences on top of all the negative ones. This is a legitimate strategy. But it DOES take time. And a LOT of effort. There IS a much easier way. And this relies on our super-crappy memory. See, most of the stuff we remember DIDN'T happen the way we remember it. How, exactly did it happen? Who knows! Who cares! This means you can get in there, inside your own brain, and CREATE any experiences and any feelings about those experiences that you want. You have to kind of constrain yourself to reality. You can't really pretend you are from another planet and you have super powers. But you can change the MEANINGS you give to random events in your past. Neurologists who study these kinds of things say that our brain can be described as "post event storytelling device." Meaning that our conscious, rational brains are more watchers than choosers. Sure, we CAN think rationally and logically. Otherwise we couldn't build things or plan things or figure out science. But if you are like most people, thinking rationally and logically is hard work. That's why algebra class is HARD. If you've ever taken a class in formal logic, it's even HARDER. It takes a LOT of brainpower. It's like our bodies. Most of the time, our bodies are relaxed. Sure, we CAN do extraordinary feats of strength and endurance, but usually we need a good reason. Like we're being chased by a tiger or somebody is paying us a lot. For example, I saw a game show where they had a truck set up in the bottom of a pool. Inside the truck were gold bricks. One couple (man and woman) vs. another couple. The contest to see which team could swim down, and carry up more bricks of gold. After only a few minutes, EVERYBODY was exhausted. And guess what? Our brains use more calories, per gram, than any other body part. So thinking logically and rationally IS LITERALLY hard work. Whenever we FORCE our brains to think logically and rationally, it's like swimming underwater while carrying bricks of gold. This is why MOST of the time, our brains are relaxed. Our conscious, rational minds is WATCHING things happen. Our massive collection of instincts, both programmed and learned, are doing most of the work. This is why it is so easy to get OUT FRAMED. It works like this. You are cruising along in some kind of social situation. Your brain is WATCHING things happen. So far, so good. In this situation, we believe we are "maintaining the frame." Then something unexpected happens. Something that our instincts (either programmed or learned) don't know what to do. So we "lose" the frame. Metaphorically, this would be out on what you THINK is a relaxing bike ride in your neighborhood. Then all of a sudden you're going up hill. And your body says, "SCREW THIS!" and you turn around. This is essentially what happens when you get outframed. You get outframed by other people. And you get outframed by situations or environments. Like when you go to the supermarket, thinking you're going to buy something healthy, but end up buying a bunch of frozen burritos. But guess what? Just like you can specifically TRAIN YOUR BODY to go up bigger and bigger hills, you can TRAIN YOUR BRAIN to handle bigger and bigger frames. So you NEVER get outframed again.   3. https://loopvids.s3.amazonaws.com/Apr23Post.mp4 One very common, and very dangerous fallacy is the "set and forget" idea. This is possible in some areas, but not others. For example, you learn to tie your shoes and you're done. A few rounds of trial and error, figure it out and you're good. Riding a bike, driving a car, making a peanut butter sandwich. All these are skill that are EASY to put into the level of unconscious competence. But many other skills are not so easy. Cooking, for example, you can continue to learn as long as you live. There are nearly infinite dishes you can make. Each one will have it's own learning curve. Music is similar. Compared to learning how to make a sandwich, it takes much longer to learn to read music and play competently. This is just the beginning. Once you can recognize the squiggly lines on the paper, and match it to the sounds and rhythm on the piano, it's just the beginning. Every new piece of music will have it's own learning curve. What does cooking and playing the piano have in common? It's YOU and the stuff you are operating on. There is ZERO possibility that you can have "set and forget" cooking skills. Where you don't ever want to LEARN MORE. If cooking is a hobby, you will always want to learn more. If playing any kind of instrument is a hobby, you will always want to learn more. Even exercise is the same. You will NEVER get to the point where you are in shape, and think you're done. Even the idea is too silly to talk about. Of getting to a certain "point" of being in shape, and having that being a PERMANENT condition. Where you NEVER need to exercise again. All three of these things, cooking, music, athletics, is ONLY you. You and some equipment, or raw materials. This is why the next level of "set and forget" is about a billion times more silly and ridiculous. Any kind of interactivity with other humans will ALWAYS require learning. Real learning, (not memorizing a bunch of stuff) REQUIRES feedback. Even relationships between masters and apprentices were YEARS. A young kid learning from a blacksmith. All learning requires trial and error. Trial and error REQUIRES error. Error IS, by definition, failure. Because most humans are TERRIFIED of failure, we LOVE the idea of set and forget learning. But that's good. Why? Because if you can embrace learning, slow, continuous, life long learning, you will gain and advantage over many of the scared and lazy people today. It was just a tallish table, with a couple of slots for people to put their elbows in. It was only up during the summer. Where guys could stop and compete on their way home from drinking in the pubs around the station. On the other hand, they also have professional arm wrestlers. People spend their career getting stronger and stronger for arm wrestling competitions. Most of us, however, only arm wrestle under certain scenarios. A lot of physical contests are like this. We compete once in a while. But at the same time, there are plenty of niche sports where people compete for a living. Plenty of sports based game shows, etc. You'll find this same thing in public speaking. Most of us are terrified of public speaking. Some people are pretty good at public speaking, so they have jobs or careers around this skill. But some people compete based on public speaking. Usually in debates, but sometimes in single speeches. But for those who really want to clean up, they have jobs that are based on their public speaking performance, like sales jobs, etc. But they also PRACTICE public speaking techniques. Even rarer are people who realize that public speaking is a very useful skill in general, so they practice it. Sure, it's one thing to practice public speaking because it's a hobby. But to practice this because you can consciously earn more money is a pretty rare thing. Even rarer are general personality traits. The only people that tend to practice these are guys who practice game. To develop interpersonal confidence and communication skills so you can get more sex. That makes sense. At least to some people. To the general, mainstream population, practicing any kind of "pick up" technique to get more sex would be perceived as kind of creepy. But there are much deeper skills. Much more powerful skills. More than contextual confidence. Even deeper than confidence itself. These are things that most people don't even know about. Let alone know how to practice. This involves the MEANING of things. The meaning of conversations. The meaning of reality. It turns out the meaning of most everything is really up to interpretation. Most people don't even consider this. Most people just show up and accept the general consensus. But when you realize just how flexible meaning is? When you're a kid, the name of the game is getting stuff from your parents. Then later, it's getting stuff from your teachers. Not necessarily stuff FROM them, but to avoid getting stuff from there. You might say that a meta description of this is getting people to BEHAVE the way you want. To give you stuff, or to leave you alone. Listen to ANYBODY talk about the "state" of the world, and you'll find two very common themes. One is it's EXTREMELY easy to find flaws with the world. Anybody can do that. Everybody DOES that. It seems to be one of our most powerful human instincts. But the solution is equally silly. Listen carefully to the META structure of everybody's solution, and it's the same. Regardless of the problem state, the solution state is simple. That other people shouldn't do what they are doing. Or they should do what they aren't doing. Everybody's solution to every problem they have is to somehow CHANGE the behavior of other people. At it's core, every single complaint, and solution, is of the following form: "Life sucks because those other people aren't doing what I think they should be doing that." To the extent people can get together and agree, that's about the best we can do. This is the most common example of "misery loves company" you'll find. What's next? To sit around and complain and wait for SOMEBODY ELSE to fix things? That works sometimes, but it's not such a great strategy. You are essentially putting your entire life in the hands of people you don't know. Sure, you might believe they SHOULD fix things. That maybe they'd promised they'd fix things. That you have a RIGHT to sit around and complain and wait for THEM to fix things. And sure, you might get lucky. They might, in fact, fix things and YOUR LIFE might get better as a result. On the other hand, you COULD take things into your own hands. Most people see the world as a CAUSE and themselves as an effect. But you can switch this common mindset. You can slowly become CAUSE, with the world as an effect. Well, not literally the world. You won't exactly be able to use your mind power to change the orbit of the Earth! But you can become more and more of a CAUSE to the people you interact with. All it takes is one small shift in this direction, and you'll find TONS of power. William James, an old school psychologist from 100 years ago said humans have tons of instincts and tons of learning capability. Consider that these CAN be the same. One reason for our "self awareness" is we can use it to learn new instincts. To learn new things to the point of unconscious competence. Normally, when we talk about learning things to this point, we say things like "learning by heart." Or learning them until they become "second nature." That term, "second nature" is very instructive. There is our "first nature," or our programmed instincts. We get hungry, we get horny, we jump when we see a cockroach or a spider. Or we have our "second nature." The things we PROGRAM into ourselves, that we no longer need to think about. If you sneak up behind a black belt and try to choke him out, he or she WON'T need to consciously think to put you on the floor. This is ONE of the main benefits of our conscious, self aware minds. We can LEARN any new "instinct" that we want. Most people don't. Most people are content to let others do their thinking for them. This is our "first nature." To find any kind of authority figure when we are in trouble. To figure out what to do. But what about those people who GIVE the orders? For most of them, that is THEIR "first nature." Some people are natural authority figures. They naturally gravitate towards positions of power. You put any group of people together, and somebody WILL hold that position. We humans are primates. We CANNOT not organize into a hierarchy. Most of the time, this is done unconsciously. From a "first nature" perspective. When we think about learning anything from a "second nature" perspective, we think in terms of specific skills. Programming, boxing, other sports or music. But the truth is that you CAN learn pretty much ANYTHING to the point of being second nature. You just need to figure out what to practice. For most people, even THIS is something they leave up to others. They go to school, and learn what they are TOLD. They get a job, and learn to do what they are TOLD. This is "second nature" learning, but through a "first nature" frame. You don't HAVE to learn this way. Sure, for most people, this is enough. But you CAN learn META skills. Like how to RADIATE authority. How to BE the authority in more and more cases. This is a muscle, like any other muscle. The more you strengthen this AUTHORITY muscle, the stronger it will get. You want to walk across the room and talk to somebody interesting, and you wonder what to say. You've got a number, and you want to call, or text, and you wonder what to say. On the other hand, some people can get away with saying pretty much anything. When we focus only on the words, we miss a LOT of what's going on. In fact, words are only the surface level of much deeper communication that is going on all the time. This is why poker players wear dark glasses and practice not showing ANY kind of facial expressions. It's also why A list actors can be so convincing when the words they are saying a VERY common. It's very possible to get the job, get the girl, get the girl to come to your place with MINIMUM words. How so? A common "truism" in self help areas is that "You'll see it when you believe it." This kind of makes sense, but it's not very helpful. Sure, if you believe you are an attractive person, you'll behave in attractive ways. And that behavior will attract positive attraction from others. But most people completely misunderstand this goofy truism. Even the goofs spouting it. They say, "If you believe it, you'll see it!" But they really only PRETEND to believe it. In reality, this "pretend believing" is more like wishing. If you know anybody who stands in front of the mirror saying a whole bunch of affirmations with strong, but fake, emotions, this is what they are doing. They are pretending very much that they believe what they are saying. Pretend beliefs won't do squat. Because pretend beliefs are the SAME as wishing. If you walk down the street PRETENDING you are attractive, you are really just wishing. This gives off very strange energy. But that statement IS true. It's that the "belief" in the statement, "if believe it, then you'll see it," MUST be genuine belief. Not pretend belief. How do you GET genuine belief? There are two ways. Nearly EVERYBODY has genuine beliefs because of the luck of their situation. Maybe they had good parents. Maybe they got lucky and had a string of positive relationships. Maybe they got lucky and had a few REALLY GOOD teachers in elementary school. Good teachers who filled their heads with positive beliefs. When their brains were still young and programmable. But for the rest of us, what do WE do? Practice, that's what. Turns out that your beliefs, and your frame that carries those beliefs are JUST LIKE muscles. For beginning acting classes, the main point is to stretch your comfort zone. To get comfortable acting like a goof. And there are also some pretty good frame building exercises. The stronger frame you can create, based on an imaginary character, the better of actor you'll be. The BEST folks in the world, who can read a script, create an imaginary character, and the believably BECOME that character, make millions of dollars. Clearly, being able to come up with a strong frame can help in PLENTY of ways. Giving speeches, selling things, persuading and seducing people, winning debates. A frame is one the most basic KEY elements of personal success. It's also the hardest thing to define. It's one of those words that gets tossed around, as a kind of catch-all. Particularly when something goes wrong. A guy will try to get a girl's number, but fail. So he'll say something like, "I lost the frame." In this context, frame is "some thing" that is a metaphor. An EXTERNAL metaphor. As if being able to "hold" this metaphorical "thing" is a skill. This is the trouble with metaphors. They are very useful for DESCRIBING things, but they are utterly useless when using them within strategies. For example, if you were an American football player, and you needed to get better at HOLDING the ball, there would be specific strategies you could practice. Not only practice, but measure. But how the heck do you practice "holding" something metaphorical, like a frame? Perhaps thinking of a "frame" that is metaphorical is a mistake. So, what IS a frame? For an actor, their frame is how strongly they BECOME their character. How congruent they are with their character. So for an actor, how well they "hold" or "keep" the frame is based on how THEY, the actor, BECOME an imaginary character. This is NOT very helpful. Why not? Because for us non-actors, the frame is always US. We don't create, and "hold" and imaginary person. We always have us. What makes up how "strong" our frame is? How much we believe in ourselves. How much we value ourselves. How much we respect ourselves. And yes, how much we not only LIKE but LOVE ourselves.   9. https://loopvids.s3.amazonaws.com/Oct25Post.mp4 A long, long time ago, I took a class in differential equations. We had learned a very simple, and very elegant way to solve equations. Except I couldn't quite wrap my mind around it. I had to rely on old school techniques. More like brute force techniques. After one test, the professor wrote a note on my test. I had gotten a decent score, so he couldn't quite criticize me. But I got the feeling he was messing with me nonetheless. One of those things that seems like a compliment but is really a covert insult. The whole purpose of the test was to demonstrate this new, elegant, problem solving technique. I didn't do that. I used old school, brute force methods. He wrote something to the effect that I was a good "soldier." That I was busily in the trenches using some very powerful "hand to hand combat" techniques. Since this was the LAST math class I would ever have to take, and the semester was nearly over, I just let it slide. But this type of thing happens quite a lot. We hang on to old school, hand to hand combat techniques. When there is much subtler, much more powerful techniques. The other night I watched this documentary on business scams. They hire pretty much anybody. And put them out on the street selling junk. The offer very little training. From a corporate standpoint, this is a pretty good model. Spend a little bit of money making crap products. Hire anybody with a pulse to sell them. Pay them ONLY commissions. The company only needs to collect whatever profits they make. They don't really care if 80% of their "salespeople" wash out. These companies are like those fish that eat half their babies. If you are too slow, you don't deserve to live. From an individual's standpoint, you CAN make money. But you need TONS of hustle. TONS of energy. TONS of "fake" charisma. All very old school, hand to hand combat, brute force techniques. Any time you have to consciously CREATE a bunch of charisma and motivation and energy, it's not very efficient. It's hard to maintain, and it never lasts. Luckily, there is a much more elegant way. One that makes any kind of EXTERNAL game much more natural. Much more efficient. Much more effective. It requires you do some simple daily exercises. Safely in your home. Safely in your brain. The more you do these exercises, the LESS you'll need to worry about any kind of outer game. You'll just need to show up. And let your inner game do all the work.   11. There is a clear discrepancy between what we say we want, and what we really want. The things we TELL ourselves (and each other) what we want is based partially on what we SHOULD want. But the things we actively GET, especially when nobody's looking, is what we REALLY want. This is one main reason why marketing studies must be done like medical studies. As objectively as possible. If you ask people for feedback, they'll tell you what they think you WANT to hear. So marketers have to take care to set up special studies so they can OBSERVE what people choose. Similarly, whenever anybody does any medical research, and the data is SELF-REPORTED, it's almost always flawed. Especially if it involves eating. Nobody is totally honest when they report what they REALLY ate. When thinking about humans and attraction, there is a common idea. That you should ignore what people SAY, and watch what people DO. But there is ONE THING that people SAY that want, and also respond to. The ONE quality we all both consciously acknowledge is desirable. And will subconsciously acknowledge as desirable. What is this mysterious trait? A sense of humor. Everybody SAYS they value humor. AND people naturally gravitate AROUND people who HAVE a strong sense of humor. Maybe because humor is a function both an inner and outer game. True outer game humor reflects inner game STRENGTH. Especially self-deprecating humor. This can be VERY DANGEROUS. Many people attempt self deprecation without being 100% congruent. So in a sense, they are kind of fishing for compliments. But if you can use self-deprecating humor with 100% congruence, it will be VERY ATTRACTIVE. Because it demonstrates massive inner confidence. This is the underlying "energy" of the "agree and amplify" response to any playful insults. "Dude, that shirt is ugly!" "I know, right! I got the UGLIEST shirt in the shop! Winner Winner chicken dinner!" This is HARD to pull off if you don't feel it. But if you DO feel it, the surface structure doesn't need to be complex. It can be very, very simple. Paradoxically, the BEST self-deprecating humor demonstrates the STRONGEST confidence around. It's almost like you are proudly challenging anybody to an insult contest. Where YOU can insult you better than anybody else can insult you. Only exceptionally confident people with exceptionally strong frames can do this.   12. There is one powerful technique that can significantly bolster your frame. This is very easy and requires zero thinking. But it's something that many people are uncomfortable doing. Yet at the same time, you'll find this one technique is something VERY powerful speakers can do. And that is to PAUSE while speaking. A common reason for exhibiting a less than strong frame is being nervous. And when we are nervous, we tend to speak quickly and swallow some of our words. We don't like social attention, so we want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. For example, if you are at a meeting at work, and you get unexpectedly called on, it's not usually a very enjoyable feeling. In situations like this, we tend to answer the question as quickly as possible, and get the attention off us. Unfortunately, this radiates a kind of frame-weakness. When people intend to harm us emotionally, this makes us an easy target for the office bully. They KNOW they can easily say something we won't know how to respond to. This is the main reason for the insult. To put us off balance, so we stand there looking like an idiot. Developing the ability to PAUSE while speaking will eliminate this. It will do so by building our frame energy. But it will also make you a much more competent speaker. It will give you the brain space to carefully choose your words and sentences. Being able to see and choose the BEST ideas is a natural outcome of building up your "pause strength." It's easy to start, and easy to practice. Practice it like any other skill. Start slowly, and build slowly. The easiest way is to put a pause in the middle of a simple sentence. The other day I saw (pause) a squirrel. At first this may seem to PULL attention toward you. And that may be uncomfortable. But pretty soon, it will feel pretty good. Once you get used to that, you can play around with it. Put pauses in different places. In between sentences. Once you develop the ability to sit or stand and THINK instead of talk, WHILE people are looking at you, this will give you a LOT of power. You'll learn to speak more slowly, more eloquently and more persuasively. Speaking slowly and choosing your words is one sign of having powerful charisma. People notice it on a subconscious level. The second benefit is carefully choosing your words. And once you learning some advanced linguistic techniques, those words you choose can be DEADLY. If you want them to.   15. Chaos theory is a pretty interesting concept. It states that despite living in a deterministic universe, we can’t predict things very far into the future. This has nothing to do with the accuracy of the measuring equipment, nor does it have anything to do with Quantum Physics. They figured this out when they started looking at computerized weather modeling. Even though weather has only a few variables, it’s impossible to predict. They took a starting point, and let it run a few weeks in computer time. They end point was a certain weather system. Then they took that SAME starting point, and altered it as slightly as they could, and let it run for the same few weeks. The results were COMPLETELY different. It turns out the longer out you need to predict, the more accurately you need to measure the staring conditions. The problem is when you compare the two. If you want to increase the time, by say twice as long (from two weeks to four weeks) you need to make the measurement TEN TIMES as accurate. If you want to go out eight weeks, you need to increase the accuracy of measuring the starting conditions by 100 times. This is why they will NEVER be able to predict weather more than a few days out. No matter how much technology they invent, they’ll never be able to do it. This is how they get the idea of the Butterfly Effect. Small changes can lead to HUGE results. A butterfly flaps his wings in Brazil, and causes a hurricane in Texas two weeks later. When most people show up to a social situation, they hope for the best. Most people have a very vague idea of what they want. But the problem is that everybody is ALWAYS communication. No matter WHO you are, you are always sending and receiving TONS of non-verbal signals. This means you are impacting their frames, and their frames are impacting your frames. And since most people have VERY WEAK frames, you end up with a Junior High School dance phenomenon. Girls on one side, boys on the other. Both looking and wishing they could communicate. Of course, in modern places, it’s not so simple. It’s actually MUCH WORSE. Every person and their own crew is like an island among many islands. All wanting to communicate, but all being afraid to get it going. And when you consider the chaos theory as it applies to inter-frame communication, it makes sense. But it’s also VERY EASY to dominate. Because if one person has frame strength that is significantly stronger than everybody else’s, everybody will know it. And everybody will know that everybody knows it. And everybody will soon being competing with everybody to be part of that frame strength.   16. Next time you are in the middle of a randomly flowing conversation, do this experiment. Watch not only how people talk, but watch how the content of the conversation is an organically evolving "thing." Kind of like a beach ball at a concert or sporting event. People kind of see it bouncing around. When it comes their way they try and keep it bouncing around. Watch people watching this imaginary "conversational ball" floating around. Most people are doing a couple of things when they are NOT talking. They are paying attention to whoever is talking. And they are trying to come up with a related story or anecdote. So if this imaginary conversation ball comes their way, they can add to it and keep it bouncing around. When the conversation dies out, it's very much like "dropping the ball." Everybody looks around for somebody to hopefully get it going again. Very much like standing in a circle and hitting a volleyball around, or playing hacky sack. The longer the ball keeps flowing, the better. But this is difficult (and create anxiety) if you don't happen to have any stories or related anecdotes. The longer you stand there without talking, the more you start to get worried that everybody is watching you stand there without talking. This leads to the most common "reason" for social anxiety. "I don't know what to say." Luckily, there is a very easy solution. And that is instead of focusing on CONTENT, start to train your ears and brain to focus on STRUCTURE. The structure of any random conversation is very similar. And it's filled with possibility. For you to reach in there, tweak it, and create some very happy, and very goofy feelings in their brains. And since this structure is something few people ever notice, it will make you look like you're on another level than everybody else. Even if you borrow the content from other people. This means you don't have to have any stories, or clever anecdotes or tales of adventure. Just the ability to playfully tweak the structure of anybody's conversation.   17. Human fears are an insanely useful thing. But only if we use them correctly. The "incorrect" use of fear is not dealing with it. A long time ago, I used to be a big fan of Stephen King. The movie, "Creepshow," which came out in the 80's, was about a bunch of short stories. He played one of the goofy characters. He was a hillbilly type who found a meteor. He picked it up, and it oozed meteor juice all over him. Since it was a comedy-horror movie, the meteor juice immediately started to mutate his arm. He thought about going to the doctor, but was stopped by his worst-feared scenario. His worst feared scenario was the doctor holding a huge knife and with a wicked grin saying, "This is going to be EXTREMELY painful!" Of course, the hillbilly didn't go to the doctor, and the meteor juice ended up mutating his entire body, eventually killing him. This is the "incorrect" use of fear. To imagine the worst case scenario, assuming it's going to happen, and not doing squat. What is the "correct" use of fear? Our worst feared outcomes are IDEAL planning tools. Most people have heard (at least a billion times) the idea of "planning for the worst while hoping for the best." Our brains are FANTASTIC in perfectly delivering to us a "worst feared" outcome. We are SUPPOSED to be afraid of those. They are SUPPOSED to be horrifying. But they aren't supposed to make us hide out in the closet while getting eaten by meteor juice. They are supposed to be used as planning tools. Things to PREVENT against. It's like our brain is saying, "HEY! Make sure this doesn't happen!" Only for most people, the only way to "make sure this doesn't happen" is to not do anything. That is a strategy, but it's a pretty useless one. Because once you HAVE that worst feared outcome, you can plan all kinds of ways around it. Especially if those worst feared outcomes come in the form of social situations. Even more so if those worst feared outcomes come in the form of other people saying things. Because once we've got our worst feared outcome in the form of somebody SAYING something, there are plenty of ways to make sure it doesn't happen. Eighteen ways, to be precise.   18. A long time ago, all societies had what is called an "oral tradition." Long before writing was invented, people had to maintain the "narrative" of who they were as a collection of stories and myths. And the only way they could keep these intact was to keep telling them over and over. Every tribe had a couple of storytellers. And these storytellers weren't thought of as high priests or anything. They were just the oldest guys who told stories to the rest. Then when kids grew up, they would more or less "self-select" for the storyteller of the next generation. Whoever could remember the best, whoever could speak the most elegantly. But then it all changed when writing was invented. This also happened when societies got really large. No longer were the stories of any society kept by the people. They were maintained by high priests with special books that only they could read. This is generally what happens when a new technology comes along. It's hoarded by the elites, and generally used to hold power over the masses. Imagine what it must have been like. Everybody only saw these high priests occasionally. And when they came out and read from special "books" (although nobody had ever seen a book before), it was like listening to god himself. They must have been thought of as wizards or magicians. Which gave them an extraordinary amount of power. Power was held in a very small groups of elites for a LONG time. Eventually the printing press was invented, and everybody started reading. But even so, there is much more to words than most people realize. Words are representations of ideas. And most people simply take ideas at face value. But any idea can be looked at from many different perspectives. And since most folks only take words at face value, when you can learn how to see all the different potential meanings in a single idea, it will be like having wizard like power. Most people talk about the same things over and over. And they have the same opinions about the same things. Over and over.   19. People are consumers of ideas. We crave information in all its forms. Social media, TV, conversations with others. The more compelling and interesting the information is, the better it feels. Kind of like food. We like food that tastes good. We don't like food that doesn't taste good. A long time ago, this was tightly calibrated. The stuff that tasted good was healthy and kept us alive and kicking. Meat, fat, fruits, veggies, nuts, roots, etc. Stuff that didn't taste good was stuff that was dangerous. Dirt, tree bark. We didn't have to think much. Just consume what tasted good, and avoid what didn't taste good. Our brains evolved to see information the same way. Stuff that "felt good" tended to be helpful. Stuff that didn't "feel good" wasn't so helpful. A lot of this information came from non-verbal communication from others. Today those ancient social signals come from social media. Which is why it's so addicting. Just like processed food, it tricks us into thinking it's healthy. But another thing we enjoy very much is different content. This why we love stories so much. Ancient people's lived in some pretty boring environments, compared to today. So guys and gals that would spin interesting tales about nature, the gods, us and our purpose were in high demand. Similarly, people today that can spin interesting tales are in equally high demand. People that can come up with an interesting take on common things. Most people say and think the same things. Over and over. And most people comment on those same things the same way. Over and over. But it is pretty easy to take the same basic ideas, that people keep saying over and over, and flip them around in some interesting ways. So interesting nobody has ever heard of them before. Which will make you a very in-demand person. People will listen to your take on things and get that feeling of enlightenment. Of seeing things for the first time. Of finally, "getting it."   20. A lot of the way reality works is really backwards. One reason is we humans have a tough time with any "cause-effect" ideas. We tend to assume connections where none exist. This has been demonstrated in children as young as six months. They believe it allowed for quick thinking back in the days of hunters and gathers. Many of our problems today stem from having hunter-gatherer instincts in a modern world. Another problem arises when we understand the relationships between our beliefs and the things we see. Most people believe they more or less see the world the way it is. And if something NEW pops up, they'll blend this NEW thing into their existing belief system. The underlying idea is that our reality around us CREATES our belief systems. When in many cases it's the other way around. Imagine a guy who is really shy and nervous. He has a belief that women think he is disgusting. This makes him feel like crap. And every time he talks to a woman, he sends out "creep vibes." This creep vibes are from his belief about himself. And these creep vibes CREATE the rejection he fears. However, he thinks this is PROOF that his beliefs are correct. When in reality, it's his beliefs that CREATE his reality. The problem with this is how the heck do you change your beliefs when you have no experiences with anything else? If we humans could just rewrite our beliefs at will, life would be MUCH easier. So most of us don't bother. We just assume things about the world. Many people don't even acknowledge that the world behaves like we TELL it to. Nobody can tell much about you. So they have to use YOUR interpretation of you as a guide. If you think you suck, they'll think you suck. Of course, nobody walks up and says, "Hi! I suck!" We project that with our frame. If you have a weak frame, it's interpreted by others before you even open your mouth. If you have a strong frame, it's interpreted by others before you even open your mouth. A good way to describe your frame is the sum total of your beliefs regarding your value. If you believe you don't provide much value, nobody else will. If you believe you provide TONS of value, everybody else will. But this belief has to be true in ALL LEVELS. It's common to have strong beliefs about yourself at the conscious level, but very weak beliefs at the subconscious level. These subconscious beliefs are the ones that make up your frame.
